CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Was it a bombing by remote control? Was a U.S. convoy attacked by trip wire on the road to the Baghdad airport? We know there are casualties this morning, but the details have been sketchy for hours now.
Let's head live to Baghdad and Jane Arraf to see what she's been able to find out.

Good morning –- Jane.

JANE ARRAF, CNN BAGHDAD BUREAU CHIEF: Good morning, Carol.

We've just been at the scene, and the details are starting to come in, although still entirely unclear whether, in fact, a U.S. soldier was killed as had originally been in some reports. The U.S. military here is still saying it was an incident, and they’re investigating. But at the scene, U.S. soldiers say it's unclear whether the target of the attack were U.S. patrols using that main road to the military airport, or whether it was an electricity vehicle that was hit when it drove over this device laid on the ground, an apparent improvised land mine.

Now, between one and three Iraqis have been injured, possibly seriously, but entirely unclear, again, whether there were American casualties in that incident this morning on the main road to the airport.

U.S. Central Command, though, says that just about 60 miles south of here on Wednesday one Marine was killed and two others wounded when their vehicle rolled over. They were responding to a call for help from other Marines who were ambushed in the area of Hillah about 60 miles south of Baghdad. Three of those Marines were wounded in that ambush -- we're still getting details on that one as well -- in an area that until now had been thought to be relatively safe -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Jane Arraf reporting live from Baghdad this morning.
