HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: We want to take you straight to the Pentagon. Our Barbara Starr is standing by for the very latest on two U.S. soldiers that have been missing in the vicinity of Baghdad.
Barbara, what do you know at this time?

BARBARA STARR, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Heidi, good morning.

U.S. officials are now confirming that in their words, an extensive search is under way in the Baghdad area for two U.S. soldiers who have been missing overnight. The details are very sketchy. We are told that the two soldiers were in a humvee, essentially a military vehicle in the vicinity of Baghdad. The military -- quote -- "lost contact" with them last night, late yesterday in Baghdad. There is no indication at this hour what happened to the soldiers, what happened to their vehicle, where they are or under what circumstances they lost contact with their commanders.

But we spoke to military officials in the area just a few moments ago, and they did confirm that at this hour, an extensive search remains under way in the Baghdad area for two U.S. soldiers that are missing -- Heidi.

COLLINS: Barbara, any idea if they were traveling alone, though, in this humvee?

STARR: We don't know, to be clear, but it would be unlikely, given the amount of unrest, the amount -- the number of incidents against U.S. forces in the area in recent days and weeks, they have been taking extra precautions, trying to travel together. So it makes it a little mysterious under what circumstances these soldiers may have lost contact, what might have happened to them.

Again, all we know is that an extensive search remains under way. They went missing late yesterday but this is the first word we have had of it here.

COLLINS: Very good.

Barbara Starr, reporting from the Pentagon this morning. Thanks so much.
