CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: It is the new Iraq, but it's giving U.S. troops what's become the same, old, ugly problems, more incidents of violence. Overnight another deadly explosion; this time at a mosque in Fallujah, and there are accusations that a U.S. bomb or a missile is to blame.
Also in central Baghdad today, reports of U.S. soldiers injured when they came under attack.

Live to Baghdad now and Jane Arraf.

Good morning -- Jane.

JANE ARRAF, CNN BAGHDAD BUREAU CHIEF: Good morning, Carol.

Well, it started out as a typical and relatively quiet Tuesday morning, but then apparently outside the gates of a university near a gas station lineup people in a civilian vehicle opened fire with a rocket-propelled grenade on two passing U.S. military vehicles, two Humvees.

Now, according to witnesses there, three American soldiers were wounded, two of them critically. One of them had his fingers severed. And an Iraqi interpreter who was working with them was killed in that attack.

Now, this is in daylight in a relatively safe -- considered safe street, a busy street next to a university, and it's an indication that the scope of these attacks is widening.

There was another rocket-propelled grenade attack as well in an area of town called Abugrabe (ph) on the outskirts of town, and this is the second attack in that neighborhood in two days. In this one, an American soldier was wounded, according to U.S. military officials, when someone opened fire as well with a grenade on his vehicle.

And in Fallujah, as you mentioned, Carol, that town west of Baghdad, we're still trying to find out why exactly there was a huge explosion next to or in a mosque late last night. That explosion has left some Iraqis dead and many more wounded. People there are enraged. In fact, there was an attack after that on a U.S. patrol station by angry residents -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Jane Arraf live from Baghdad this morning.
