CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: A meeting of the minds. The Palestinian and Israeli prime ministers will get together today to talk security. A fragile truce remains in place for now. I say for now, since we have reports of more violence this morning.
Live to Jerusalem now and Jerrold Kessel.

Good morning -- Jerrold.

JERROLD KESSEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Carol.

Yes, a young Palestinian was shot and killed as he reportedly tried to attack Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint inside the West Bank. And this is the second shooting incident, apparently Palestinian- initiated violence, in the West Bank in less than two days since the declaration of that unilateral cease-fire by the Palestinian group. And it's certainly cast a shadow over that meeting that will be held this afternoon here in Jerusalem between the two prime ministers, Mahmoud Abbas and Ariel Sharon.

Now, whether it is, as you put it very cogently, a meeting of the minds, well, you're going to have ready loggerheads -- two men at loggerheads at this early stage in the efforts to get the peace initiative under way. That may come out from this meeting.

But what is interesting is that they've chosen Mahmoud Abbas and Ariel Sharon to make public statements. They've met twice before, but that was very much under wraps, and we didn't get a lot out of those meetings. This time before they go in they'll make public statements, and that is significant.

But it could be there's a difference of perception of how to go forward and consolidate these early gains in this promising situation that has developed since Israel began handing over land in Gaza to Palestinian control and will continue with that in Bethlehem on the West Bank. Because, while Ariel Sharon is bound to tell Mahmoud Abbas, so we hear from the Israeli side, that they must crack down and take away the weapons of the militants, the Palestinians want an early handover of all of the towns in the West Bank to their control.

Will there be a difference of opinion? Will they allow it to be and to come to the fore? That could come to the fore at this meeting this afternoon -- Carol.

COSTELLO: All right, Jerrold Kessel live from Jerusalem. And the prime ministers may come out and make those public statements that Jerrold was talking about around 10:45 Eastern Time.
