People Flipping For Flip-Flops

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: All across the country, people are flipping for flip-flops.
But as CNN's Jeanne Moos discovered, the rubber soled summer shoe isn't what it used to be, which would be cheap.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Flip-flop, flip- flop, they've always been for big feet and little feet. But now they're for fashionable feet.
ALLYSON MITCHELL, SPECIAL PROJECTS, EDUCATION, LUCKY: The issue this season, without question, is this from Sigerson Morrison. This is your plain old rubber flip-flop, but with a heel.
MOOS: A heel? Why would anyone put a heel on a flip-flop and charge 85 bucks for it?
ALEXANDRA CHANTECAILLE, SIGERSON MORRISON:
Sexify it a little bit and make it...
MOOS (on camera): To what?
CHANTECAILLE: Just to sexify it.
MOOS (voice-over): The lowly flip-flops not so lowly anymore. Flip-flops now come in terrycloth, ultra suede, foam wood that's actually foam. A store called Ricky's sells flip-flops adorned with monkeys, hula dancers, snide remarks like, "If you think it's ugly, you're too old." There's even a Web site called flipflopfunkshow.com (ph), where the best seller is based on bra straps.
Men have gotten into the act.
(on camera): It's very Astroturf.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes.
MOOS (voice-over): Or how about a flip-flop with a coconut insole? You can even wear one around your neck, the flip-flop pendant. Editors at the shopping magazine "Rocky's" say flip-flops are the new sneakers.
MITCHELL: You want to see the flip-flop that's the craziest thing you've ever seen? MOOS: So oddly packaged, it looks more like a Frisbee than footwear.
MITCHELL: Look at these from Puma.
MOOS: Puma says they're inspired by an ancient Japanese wooden sandal, hence the name.
MITCHELL: ... Japandle. And they're shaped like half a pizza pie.
MOOS: A whole pie when you put your feet together. Hold the anchovies. But your stomach may flip-flop at the price for this pair, $108 on sale at a trendy store called Camper.
As for the It shoe, the flip-flop with a heel...
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I'm not even a girl and I think that's awesome.
MOOS: These two wear theirs to work. On the first day...
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I had literally 10 people come up to me and go oh my god, I love your shoes. We were in a meeting and they were pointing at my feet going your shoes, your shoes, where did you get them?
MOOS: There's a waiting list at the Siegerson Morrison store.
