FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: Well on now to the Middle East. Palestinian cease-fire violations prompted a response from Israel in Gaza today. Let's get more on that story from Jerusalem bureau chief Mike Hanna -- Mike.
MIKE HANNA, CNN JERUSALEM BUREAU CHIEF: Well, Fredricka, obstacles, incidents of violence, but still the implementation of that U.S.-backed road map continues to grind on.

In the West Bank city of Bethlehem, tangible change on the ground. Palestinian police officers out in the street instead of Israeli soldiers. The soldiers withdrew in the past 24 hours as the Palestinians took over security in that West Bank city. Israeli troops still on the outskirts, but inside the city on the streets, it's only Palestinian police to be seen.

In Gaza, a road opened 48 hours ago was closed again for a few hours. This followed a rocket attack by Palestinian gunmen on a Jewish settlement. Israel closed the roads, protested to the Palestinian authority and to the American mediators on the ground. But the reopened that road again within a matter of hours and traffic continued to flow freely.

So incidents of violence including an Israeli attack when it said it attempted to arrest an Al Aqsa Brigades member in the West Bank. But still the implementation of that road map is proceeding at pace -- Fredricka.

WHITFIELD: Mike Hanna in Jerusalem, thanks very much.
