FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: More now on the latest developments on the reported killings of at least two U.S. soldiers in Iraq.
For that, we go to Jane Arraf in Baghdad -- Jane.

JANE ARRAF, CNN BAGHDAD BUREAU CHIEF: Fredricka, the U.S. military says one American soldier was shot and killed near Mahmudiyah just south of Baghdad last night, while another one killed when an RPG, a rock -- sorry -- a rocket-propelled grenade was fired at his convoy outside of Baghdad as well, another soldier wounded in that attack.

Now, those weren't the only attacks. There were also attacks in Ramadia (ph) and Balad, which is -- sorry -- Ramadi and Balad, two other towns near Baghdad.

Now, it's an indication that these hot spots, which have been simmering for some time, are just not settling down, and according to U.S. officials, some of those attacks were launched by mortar, something that we haven't really seen lately, that use of heavier weapons.

Unfortunately, this is not all that unusual -- rocket-propelled grenade attacks firing at soldiers, firing at convoys. U.S. officials have said there are at least a dozen attacks, attempted attacks, a day. And it just doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon -- Fredricka.

WHITFIELD: All right, Jane Arraf in Baghdad, thanks very much.
