FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: In Iraq, this new development coming in. Reports of at least one U.S. soldier being killed there.
For the latest, we go to our Jane Arraf, who is in Baghdad -- Jane, what do you know?

JANE ARRAF, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Fredricka, the U.S. military says one U.S. soldier was killed after his convoy came under rocket propelled grenade attack near Tikrit -- that's Saddam Hussein's hometown -- late last night. The soldier from the 4th I.D., again, one U.S. soldier killed, another one wounded, according to the U.S. military.

Now, it wasn't the only attack. Separately, U.S. troops in Ramadi and Balad came under attack, as well. Now, those are two towns near Baghdad that have been the subject of almost constant attacks and attempted attacks against U.S. soldiers.

It's becoming almost a daily list of these attacks. In fact, U.S. military officials say there are probably about a dozen every day, not all of them successful, but certainly some of them are -- Fredricka.

WHITFIELD: And, Jane, what more do we know about this convoy that involves, you know, at least one fatality?

ARRAF: Not very much at this point. Information is very slow in coming from outside of Baghdad, particularly when it's filtered through the military, as you've probably noticed. So far all we know is that one soldier is dead and another one wounded. But certainly it's a frequent occurrence, these RPGs, rocket propelled grenades, lobbed at passing convoys. It does happen almost on a daily basis. It's not just the shooting. These have become almost the weapons of choice here. They're grenades fired from almost like a gun and they're a very easy thing to use against convoys, which are frequently on those main roads between Baghdad and their main bases around the country.

They're still trying to settle this area north of Baghdad and west of Baghdad. It's what they refer to as essentially a triangle that was the bedrock of Saddam Hussein's support, and still the source and location of a lot of these attacks against American soldiers -- Fredricka.

WHITFIELD: All right, thanks very much.
