CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: As we just told you, the American League used some late game heroics to win baseball's annual Midsummer Classic.
CNN's Matt Morrison has more on the game from Chicago.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

MATT MORRISON, CNN CORRESPONDENT: The 74th All-Star Game was billed as this time it counts. And it certainly did for a little known Ranger who hit a Texas sized home run, capping an improbable comeback that earned the American League home field advantage in the World Series.

HANK BLALOCK, HIT GAME-WINNING HOME RUN: It's really still just sinking in right now. It's an unbelievable feeling for my first All- Star Game to get there and really make a difference for the American League.

GARRET ANDERSON, NAMED GAME'S MVP: On paper we weren't supposed to score any runs off Gagne. And to do it in that fashion, man, it definitely was very exciting.

ERIC GAGNE, SURRENDERED HOME RUN TO LOSE GAME: I can't worry about it. You know it's no big deal. I mean it's a big deal for the World Series, but it comes down to it, you know want to do that for the fans and we did it and it come down to me.

GARY SHEFFIELD, 0-1 RUN SCORED FOR NATIONAL LEAGUE: Only time will tell when the World Series get here if it made a difference. And hopefully it don't come back to backfire on the National League team, but you know we had a chance to win this game but we had the right guys out there and sometimes it don't go your way.

MORRISON: It was the first time Dodger closer Eric Gagne had blown a save all season. And although it still doesn't count in the official statistics, it sure could in October.

Matt Morrison, CNN, Chicago.
