BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Listen, there is a promising new development today. We talked about this story yesterday, and the story of that 12-year-old girl who police say vanished with a former U.S. Marine she met online. According to police in Britain, the girl contacted her mother last night to say that she was OK. While it came as a relief to her parents in England, the girl still missing.
Jim Boulden back in the hometown of the girl. Jim is with us now.

Good afternoon there, Jim. What do you know?

JIM BOULDEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, good morning, Bill.

Yes, Shivan did call her mother last night around 8:00 local time, and of course that was a great relief to the family. They said she seems well, and she said she was very happy, and most importantly, she said she was still with Toby Studebaker. The family is very concerned because she gave no indication that she was coming home.

So just a few hours ago the mother came over here to the police station so she could make an appeal to Shivan and to Toby to come back to Britain, and in fact, the mom says she would welcome Toby back, as well. She just wants Shivan back.

Let's listen to that now.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JOANNA PENNINGTON, GIRL'S MOTHER: I understand that she's got feelings for him, and he may have feelings for her. I'm actually quite relieved that he's still with her, in a way, because he's obviously helping to look after her. And that, you know, as long as she comes back, she can even come back with him. I'm not bothered, I just want her back. She can even come back with him, I'm really not bothered.

BOULDEN: So it's clear now that they are still, in fact, together. That's a very different story from what we were hearing from the Studebaker family yesterday in Michigan. They said that Toby called them and heard he was very distressed when he found out she was 12, and he said he had left her. But according to the police here and the mom said the phone call last night made it clear that they're still together. So the Manchester police this morning have released some video of Toby Studebaker. You can probably see that now. It's CCTV video of him at the Manchester Airport when he arrived on Saturday morning. He and Shivan met at that airport, and then flew to Heathrow, and then on to France, and that is where the trail still has run cold. They have no idea, even though Toby has called Michigan, and Shivan has called to Leigh, England, the police say they still don't know where are, and they just want Chivan to know that it's time to come home -- Bill.

HEMMER: Quite a mystery there. Jim Boulden, thanks, in England.
