HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: Jacqui Jeras has the primo assignment of the weekend, no question about it, the 150th birthday, if you can say it...
THOMAS ROBERTS, CNN ANCHOR: There you go. Sound it out.

COLLINS: ... of Central Park in New York, Jacqui Jeras is there for an incredible celebration, right, Jacqui?

JACQUI JERAS, CNN METEOROLOGIST: That's right. In fact, the walk/run just got over and done with. You can see all of the runners behind me. About 5,000 people participated in this this morning.

We're probably going to see a good 150,000 people here throughout the weekend. Festivities go on all day long and wrap things up later with Duetto later on tonight, a concert, which will be here in the park.

And a lot of people really come to Central Park and it has deep meaning for them. They have some very good memories there. We want to ask a couple of people -- we've got some runners over here to the side. Some people from out of town.

And, Tommy (ph), you're a local New Yorker, yes?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, I am.

JERAS: And you live on Long Island? Is that right?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I live on the island now. I grew up in Queens.

JERAS: And what kind of memories do you have of Central Park?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: My favorite memory of the park is, when I was kid -- my dad is a retired police officer, and we -- I came to a concert with him right over here in the band shell. I don't remember who was playing at the time. I was a little guy, but that was fun.

JERAS: And you were in the race today. Do come here and jog regularly?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, I do. It's a great place to run. There's always people running and biking, and there's always a lot of wonderful things happening here.

JERAS: All right. Thanks very much. And congratulations on the race today.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Thank you.

JERAS: And, ladies, where are you guys from?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Toronto, Canada.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Toronto, Canada.

JERAS: All right. And is this your first time visiting the park or...

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, it is.

JERAS: And what's your impression?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Well, it's jut wonderful being here to be part of this wonderful celebration, and I'm happy we chose the right weekend.

JERAS: All right. Excellent. Well, you guys enjoy your visit.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Thank you.

JERAS: All right. Weatherwise, it couldn't be better. Temperatures have been the upper 60s and lower 70s all morning long. Seventy degrees right now with mostly sunny skies and expecting to see sunshine and 82 into the afternoon hours.

Let's take a look at the rest of the country here.

We've got some wet weather to talk about, and this is actually great news across parts of the Southwest into Las Vegas, Los Angeles. Some nice scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms, especially in the morning hours for today, and this is the remnants of what was Tropical Storm or Hurricane Claudette.

Some heavier thunderstorms. Some of these have been severe and dumping some large hail and also some damaging winds into parts of Arkansas. That's moving through the Memphis area now, and the Carolinas also getting some stormy weather. You can see that hotbed of activity right there in the middle of the country.

But, if you live in the upper Midwest, across the Great Lakes, and in the Northeast, looking forward to some fabulous weather.

What about those temperatures? You are still baking out there today into the Southwest, also into the Southern Plains States. Triple digits for Dallas. The Arklatex area is under a heat advisory where heat indices are going to be 105 and 110 degrees. So use a lot of caution. Be like these people here today. Exercise in the morning. Exercise in the evening hours. And drink lots of fluids. And it's going to be a scorcher.

We finally have some heat relief on the way a little bit later on in the week by Wednesday. Much of the eastern half of the country will watch for those temperatures to be cooling down. But, all and all, a gorgeous day out here at Central Park.

We're going to have a lot more coming up later on in the 9:00 hour. We're going to be talking more about the history. And, believe it or not, Central Park was mostly manmade, and we'll give you all the details on that coming up in just a little bit -- Heidi, Thomas.

ROBERTS: All right, Jacqui. We look forward to it.

Beautiful day up there. Jealous.

COLLINS: Yes. It is a beautiful day. I'm glad somebody made it. That's for sure. Manmade or not.
