CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: We must take you to Iraq first. Around 4:30 Eastern this morning we got word of yet another attack against U.S. troops. One more American is dead. That means 27 American troops have died this month alone.
Live to Baghdad now and Rym Brahimi. She has the details for us.

Good morning -- Rym.

RYM BRAHIMI, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning to you, Carol.

Indeed, the U.S. authorities here say one soldier was killed. He was from the First Armored Division. He was killed along with an Iraqi interpreter that was with him when their vehicle went over an explosive device. Now, this happened early on this morning.

Witnesses, who were at the scene, said that the convoy also fell under rocket-propelled grenade fire.

Now, of course, you know that's not the only incident. There has been several, as you mentioned, over the month. Just yesterday, two soldiers were killed from the 101st Airborne. They were killed near the northern city of Mosul. Their convoy actually fell under -- was ambushed and fell under small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire as well.

Now, that brings to 152 the number of U.S. soldiers basically killed in action since the war began. And Paul Wolfowitz, the deputy defense secretary, is in town to boost the morale of U.S. troops here. He said that the remnants of the Baath Party regime were trying to kill American soldiers to make them go away. Well, he said that was not going to happen.

Also in town, Carol, General Abizaid. Now, he is the U.S. commander of U.S. troops here in Iraq, visiting the country for the first time. He says that he's announced a plan to create a 7,000- strong force of Iraqis to help U.S. soldiers maintain security in Iraq -- Carol.
