CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: A father is now charged with doing the unthinkable, killing his two children. Police have not found the bodies of 14-year-old Sarah and 11-year-old Philip Gehring. They disappeared with their father after a Fourth of July fireworks show in New Hampshire. The father, Manuel Gehring, was arrested in California back on July 10.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

PETER W. HEED, NEW HAMPSHIRE ATTORNEY GENERAL: Manuel Gehring has been indicted by the Hillsboro County grand jury for two counts of first degree murder relating to the death of his children, Sarah and Philip.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

COSTELLO: Gehring is due to arrive at Concord, New Hampshire, today and he'll be arraigned tomorrow.

This tragedy has gripped the Granite State.

Mark Ericson and Danielle Carrier, better known as the "WOKQ Waking Crew in Portsmouth and Manchester, New Hampshire," on the phone live with us right now.

Good morning.

MARK ERICSON, WOKQ WAKING CREW, PORTSMOUTH AND MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE: Good morning, Carol.

DANIELLE CARRIER, WOKQ WAKING CREW, PORTSMOUTH AND MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE: Morning.

COSTELLO: So this guy is expected back in New Hampshire today, huh?

ERICSON: He is expected back in New Hampshire, and they are expecting to charge him with, actually, a couple of different things. He is going to be charged in local court and then county court.

CARRIER: Well the first -- the first charge is actually going to be on a custody charge, and then in Hillsboro court, superior court, he will be charged later on with first degree murder charges.

COSTELLO: Any idea of the motive behind this?

ERICSON: Well the deal is that the authorities have tried to backtrack all of this. They believe he left Concord around July 4 or 5th with the -- with the bodies of his children. What they are now saying and what the warrant is going to say later on today is that he is going to be charged with shooting his children to death somewhere in Hillsboro County and then leaving the state with their bodies and disposing of their bodies along the way. And he was in a custody dispute with his ex-wife.

COSTELLO: What do -- what are the police saying, what if they never find the bodies of the children?

ERICSON: Well under New Hampshire law, under certain conditions, if there is overwhelming evidence, and apparently the attorney general's office believes in this case there is. In a case of overwhelming evidence, you can be charged with murder in the state without actual bodies being produced.

COSTELLO: Well you have to wonder what he is telling police as to what happened to his kids?

ERICSON: Yes, and that's been a little convoluted over the course of the past week or so. He has not been in the state. However, we have been told that he is -- quote, unquote -- "in the custody of the Concord Police Department." So while he has been traveling across country with federal authorities, apparently a Concord police officer is onboard this caravan as well, and technically, he is in the custody of Concord Police.

COSTELLO: And when he appears in court today will there be a video camera filming the whole thing?

ERICSON: That remains to be seen just yet. We do know that local reporters have talked to some of his friends in Concord. It doesn't look like he is going to have an awful lot of support when he gets back to town.

CARRIER: No, even close friends are saying there's probably not many people who are going to be on his side when he returns to Concord.

COSTELLO: All right.

ERICSON: There has not been quite the media frenzy yet to figure out whether or not cameras are going to be allowed in court.

COSTELLO: Well I'm sure it's to come.

Mark Ericson, Danielle Carrier, thanks for being with us on DAYBREAK this morning. We appreciate it.
