LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: All right, the big question on this Friday, is will "Seabiscuit" gallop to the top of the box office over the weakened? That's just one of the movies making a debut though. And entertainment reporter Kendis Gibson is right here. He's got a look at what's new on the big screen.
KENDIS GIBSON, CNN ENTERTAINMENT CORRESPONDENT: Well you know today's date, July 25 is important because of your anniversary, as we've heard all morning.

HARRIS: Forget about that.

GIBSON: You know what? It's going to look like December or October because it is the unofficial start to the whole Oscar race. They're saying that this is probably going to be an Oscar contender, "Seabiscuit." And it is supposedly the first good movie of the summer.

Of course, you know the story, it is of the Depression Era horse that was an underdog and came up with many victories and became just an inspirational story for many during the Depression at the time. That horse was seen as being too small and its jockey too tall. But somehow they were able to overcome those odds and became a hit with many folks.

Now, whether or not this movie will be a hit with many viewers will be the big question. But they're banking, Universal and Dreamworks banking a lot of money on it. They paid some $80 million to try to get the movie made. So they're hoping that will come back -- at least in box office gold, if not Oscar gold.

HARRIS: An usually they need a big weekend, the first opening weekend to recoup that money and to make the profits after that.

GIBSON: Absolutely, and that's been the key all summer long with many of the blockbuster movies.

HARRIS: But we haven't heard the word Oscar mentioned with many of the movies over the summer so far.

GIBSON: The only movie we're hearing Oscar mentioned with is "Pirates of the Caribbean" for Johnny Depp's performance so far. But as far as the other movies, "T-3" not likely to get there. Another movie that's not likely to get Oscar nod, "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider."

HARRIS: May not get Oscar's nod, might get a whole bunch of guys' nods though. GIBSON: A lot of guys will see this movie, because it is all about, well, yes, Angelina Jolie. She looks good in many numerous outfits, doing many stunts. She fight, she flies, as you see there. And she even knocks out a shark under water. There you go.

This movie is probably going to end up make a lot of money. Of course it was based on a video game. The first one based on a video game. and we're told that this one actually is better than the first. But for a lot of folks that doesn't actually say a lot because the first one was supposed to be pretty bad.

HARRIS: Yes, I saw the first one and I must say I was not all that impressed.

GIBSON: But it made $130 million at the box office and in Hollywood that means time for a sequel.

HARRIS: You know if you make a woman who looks like that walk around in Victoria's Secret outfits fighting crime, of course you can make that much money.

GIBSON: Is that all it is?

HARRIS: Well it sort of what.

GIBSON: Oh, OK. That's probably part of the reason why a lot of folks are going to go see the movie.

HARRIS: Again.

GIBSON: Again. Maybe you'll get dragged to go see "Spy Kids 3D."

HARRIS: Yes, my two kids are hot to see this one. I've seen some of the commercials from the advertisement where it actually looks pretty good so far.

GIBSON: Yes, this movie, it sort of brings back that whole 1950s era thing, phenomenon, back to the movies in 3D. And many of critics say they use the 3D in a good fashion for fantasy sequences.

No, in this one, one of the kids decides to give up the spy business and then gets taken by a villain who traps him in a video game. And the other spy kid is forced to go back and try to rescue them. Sylvester Stallone returns in this movie. And you know what? I'm very happy to say that it is his first family movie since "Stop or my Mom Will Shoot." We're all depressed about that, there's been a ten-year gap since then, but he's back now.

HARRIS: Now you can rest assured now.

GIBSON: Oh, yes.

HARRIS: So Kendis can come off the roof now. Good deal.

GIBSON: "Spy Kids" will probably do well with the family crowd. HARRIS: Yes, I'm sure.

GIBSON: It's the only family movie that's really out there this weekend, outside of "Finding Nemo" if you want to go see that.

HARRIS: And they only have a few weeks left before kids go back school so they got to get out this weekend.

GIBSON: Exactly.

HARRIS: All right, good deal. Kendis Gibbons -- Kendis Gibson...

GIBSON: Ah, 20 years. You know, it's starting to show.

HARRIS: Well you know it's the first thing to go, you know, at least for news types. Thanks, Kendis Gibson. Good to see you, have a good weekend.

GIBSON: Congrats.

HARRIS: Thanks, appreciate that.
