CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: We are watching things in Los Angeles this morning. Still no reports of violence there. Police have been concerned because of the outcome of a police beating trial. It involved that videotape of teenager Donovan Jackson being slammed onto a police car by an Inglewood police officer last summer. It stunned many, and now for some, the jury's decision is doing the same thing.
Here is CNN's Dan Lothian.

DAN LOTHIAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, indeed this was a highly- anticipated case, the verdicts were highly anticipated, because this was very controversial.

Outside the courthouse, there were a lot of protestors, there were community activists. There was also tight security here as the jury walked into the courtroom.

JUDGE WILLIAM HOLLINGSWORTH, L.A. COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT: Therefore on Count I, I'm going to declare the jury unable to reach a verdict and further deliberations would not resolve that problem. So, I'm declaring a hung jury as to Count I.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The People of the State of California vs. Bijan Darvish. We, the jury, in the above-entitled action find the defendant, Bijan Darvish, not guilty of the crime of filing a false report in violation of Penal Code Section 118.1, as charged in Count II of the information.

LOTHIAN: Jeremy Morse, of course, was the former Inglewood police officer caught on that videotape slamming then 16-year-old Donovan Jackson onto the back of a squad car.

Now, this case, as I mentioned earlier, has been very controversial. Community activists had been concerned about the verdict leading to possible unrest. The message that community activists are trying to send out to the public is that they can be angry, but taking out that anger on the streets is not the right thing to do. They say that this needs to be played out in the courts, and they're urging prosecutors to retry this case.

Now, the district attorney says it really is too early to determine whether or not they will retry this case. They still have to look at the overall case, look at potential new evidence. They hope to make a decision by the end of next month. Back to you.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

COSTELLO: Thanks very much.
