BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: The saying says, you scream and I scream and we all scream when we hear what the food police are saying about one of our favorite treats, especially in the summertime. The skinny now on which ice creams are best and the healthiest from Dr. Sanjay Gupta. There's a new study out?
DR. SANJAY GUPTA, CNN MEDICAL CORRESPONDENT: There is. And I got a complete assortment for you guys to taste test. But a couple of things. This a study that came out of the Center for Science and Policy of Science and they actually looked at all sorts of different ice creams and yogurts trying to figure which is the healthiest, if any. And they concluded that none of them are healthy but there some that are better than others.
Start first with the cone. You talk about the cone, most people do eat ice cream in a cone. And if you eat a Ben & Jerry's waffle cone, that's 320 calories and a half a day's worth of saturated fat.
HEMMER: In one cone?
GUPTA: That's the chocolate dipped one.
SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: And that's without any ice cream in it?
GUPTA: That's without the ice cream in it at all. Just the cone itself. Half a day's worth of saturated fat.
By the way, Bill, that's about a half a pound of barbecued baby back ribs.
HEMMER: I'll take two.
GUPTA: Put some ice cream in there now, Chunky Monkey was the one that they used in the study. That's right here as well. That's going to take it up to 820 calories and 30 grams of saturated fat. That's a day and a half day's worth of saturated fat.
O'BRIEN: That's so worth it. Come on.
GUPTA: Well, we'll keep going here.
The Haagen-Dazs Mint Chip Dazzler. That's going to be real the key here. That is 1,270 calories, 38 grams of saturated fat...
HEMMER: Which one is that, Sanjay? GUPTA: ... that's at the very end over here -- 1,270 calorie, 38 grams of saturated fat. That's like eating a t-bone steak, a Caesar salad and a baked potato with sour cream.
HEMMER: May I?
(LAUGHTER)
GUPTA: Go ahead.
(CROSSTALK)
HEMMER: It's killing us not to try it, isn't it?
O'BRIEN: I know. Go ahead. Taste it for me.
(CROSSTALK)
GUPTA: There are some that are obviously better than others. And, you know, you talk about ice creams, you talk about sorbets. Sorbets are going to be the lowest in fat. We're going to talk about what "low fat" really means in a second as well.
Sherberts are just next up to that. There are things now as well called soy ice creams. And actually, I'm going to have you guys try these as well in a second. But these are actually, I think they're pretty good. And somebody's already tried some of that one.
HEMMER: Soy ice cream?
GUPTA: Soy ice cream. You're going to try some of that as well. And then the Icees as well which is sort of like Popsicles. And they're going to be lower in fat, obviously, but higher in sugar and higher in carbohydrates. So we're going to talk about that.
Let's do a quick taste test. I actually set this up, all four of these over here. You guys don't know what these are yet. And you guys can go ahead and just start eating those.
HEMMER: (UNINTELLIGIBLE) clean palate first?
GUPTA: Yes, cleanse the palate.
O'BRIEN: Because we;re going to taste each and every one of them?
GUPTA: Yes, start with one, two, three, four.
HEMMER: What are we tasting for?
O'BRIEN: Oh, and we have to share a spoon?
HEMMER: We don't know each other that well.
O'BRIEN: I go this way? Oh, I get it.
GUPTA: Yes, OK.
O'BRIEN: Not that I don't...
GUPTA: You guys are getting so close here.
Let me tell you few things about ice cream though as we're talking. Obviously, ice cream, a good source...
HEMMER: Very good. I like that.
GUPTA: You like that one? OK. Vitamin C and calcium, vitamin D as well. A good source. So there are some attributes to it.
But again, when talking about ice cream, there are ice creams that are going to be called "low-fat ice creams" and oftentimes when giving the low fat they're actually adding sugar, they're adding calories to it. So while the fat, the saturated fat you're talking about might actually go down, you're talking about increasing calories, potentially.
How you guys doing there?
(CROSSTALK)
O'BRIEN: Clearly very fattening, because it's very delicious and (UNINTELLIGIBLE). No. 2, No. 3 and not crazy about that one.
SHIELDS: You're not crazy about No. 4?
O'BRIEN: Right.
GUPTA: That was the soy cream.
How about you?
HEMMER: I liked this one and did not care for any of these.
GUPTA: Interesting. No. 1?
HEMMER: Yes, that was it.
GUPTA: All right, you guys both picked the highest caloric ice cream.
(CROSSTALK)
GUPTA: Yes, 270 calories in a half a cup. That's about a tennis ball size, incidentally, when measuring at home. A half a cup, which is a serving. Andy always asks, What is a serving? Well, it's half cup, and that's about a tennis ball size of ice cream. Two hundred and seventy calories in that, 55 percent of it's going to be saturated fat. That's quite a bit.
O'BRIEN: So this is one to completely avoid? Do not eat.
GUPTA: How did you -- did you guys like the others at all? Did you like the sorbet? No. 3?
O'BRIEN: Those are sorbets? Yes.
GUPTA: Those are sorbets. You're going way down, 130 calories in the sorbet. No saturated fat. So a good thing to keep in mind, then.
If you liked that one almost as good as the other one, go ahead and take the sorbet.
HEMMER: You know, Soledad and I have known each other all of our lives, right? About a month, now.
O'BRIEN: A little over a month.
HEMMER: She has revealed to us that one of her vices is the Mr. Softy trucks here in Manhattan.
O'BRIEN: (UNINTELLIGIBLE) Mr. Softy.
GUPTA: Well here's an interesting thing, whipped ice cream actually a better idea than probably what you're eating right there because the ice cream in most...
HEMMER: Really? It's healthier?
GUPTA: Well, what happens is when they pack ice cream like this you get very little air inside. So you're getting a much denser ice cream than you are with the whipped ice cream. So you actually get less. A cup's not always a cup, not always a cup.
O'BRIEN: Mr. Softy actually a healthy choice.
HEMMER: Thanks for making her day, and mine, too.
O'BRIEN: Oh, Sanjay, thanks.
