CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: A Kobe Bryant update for you now. He was out and about this weekend greeting his fans and getting some praise from the public, but another appearance by the L.A. Lakers star is making headlines this week.
CNN national correspondent Gary Tuchman has an update for you from Eagle, Colorado.

GARY TUCHMAN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Kobe Bryant is used to having the crowds cheer for him, and that's precisely what happened this past weekend. He and his wife went to the Universal Amphitheater in L.A. for a show called the "Teen Choice Awards." When he got there, throngs of people were applauding, people were chanting his name. Kobe Bryant stopped on the red carpet. He waved. He posed for pictures. He put up a peace sign. And then he went inside the auditorium for the show.

This is an annual show, where teenagers across the country vote for their favorite entertainers, and he was voted favorite male athlete. So, he actually took to the stage. The show was taped. It hasn't been on TV yet. It will be on Wednesday night.

But, according to "Entertainment Tonight Online," they say Kobe Bryant paraphrased Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., when he accepted his award, saying -- quote -- "An injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere." And that's not the typical line one would utter at this type of show, but these are not typical times for the Los Angeles Laker guard.

On the same day the show will air on television, he'll be in this courthouse behind me here in Eagle, Colorado, for his initial appearance in court. A judge will tell him the charges against him, advise him of his rights, tell him what sentence he could possibly face.

And then the judge will set a date for a preliminary hearing, and that could be very important, because at that preliminary hearing, prosecutors for the first time will say in open court what some of their evidence against Kobe Bryant is. If the judge finds there is probable cause, the judge will then set another hearing, an arraignment hearing in a higher court, the district court, where Kobe Bryant would issue a plea of guilty or not guilty.

This is Gary Tuchman, CNN, in Eagle, Colorado.
