Schwarzenegger Expected to Announce Decision on California Gubernatorial Race

Aired August 6, 2003 - 19:08   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: The California recall election of Governor Gray Davis is two months away, but figuring out who may get into the race has become, well, a major spectator sport. The big question right now, will Arnold Schwarzenegger choose to run in the October 7 recall election or not? We are expecting to hear literally any moment now. The actor is taping an appearance on "The Tonight Show" and Thelma Gutierrez is outside the Burbank Studios waiting for word on Arnold's decision. Thelma?
THELMA GUTIERREZ, CNN CORRESPONDENT: I can tell you, Anderson, that the actor just pulled into the studio right now. He waved to reporters. And he appeared to be in very high spirits. Now, we are still awaiting a written statement to be released at any time, according to his press secretary. That statement should be e-mailed to news organizations, and then we should be able to have word for you.

It will happen sometime prior to "The Tonight Show" taping which begins in about 20 minutes or so. But, so far, no word at this time. Even so, it has been a big day of announcements here in California. Senator Dianne Feinstein announced today that she would not run for governor in the October 7 recall election. She called that election a terrible mistake for state. She had also been urged by some members of the Democratic Party to run but said after thinking a great deal about the recall, she decided that she would not place her name on the ballot.

Now, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, a Democrat, said that she may now throw her hat into the ring, now that Feinstein is out. Another big announcement today, columnist Arianna Huffington, tossed her hat into the ring saying that she would run as an independent, hoping to reach out to disenfranchised minorities and people who have generally given up on politics.

Again, actor Arnold Schwarzenegger expected to release a written statement any time now with his intentions. After that he's expected to talk about his decision on "The Tonight Show" and then after the taping he's expected to hold a news conference. Anderson, back to you.

COOPER: All right. Thelma Gutierrez.
