CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: A new twist in the ever changing tale of California's recall election. Governor Gray Davis's lieutenant governor says he will enter the race. He will become the first prominent Democrat to abandon Davis's efforts to keep his fellow party members off the ballot.
And Arnold Schwarzenegger hopes to turn his star power into political power. He's running as a Republican candidate for governor of California in the October recall election.

Our Charles Feldman has details on the big surprise announcement.

CHARLES FELDMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Conventional wisdom was turned on its head when the actor Arnold Schwarzenegger surprised just about everyone and during a taping of "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" announced that he was running for governor of the State of California in a recall election scheduled for the 7th of October.

ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER (R), CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR CANDIDATE: The biggest problem that we have is that California has been run now by special interests. All of the politicians are not anymore making the moves for the people, but for special interests. And we have to stop that. And so this is why I am running for governor.

FELDMAN: Up until the announcement during the taping of "The Tonight Show," it had been presumed that there was great opposition on the part of Schwarzenegger's wife to his running for governor of California. But he put that to rest by saying during the taping of the show that his wife, who is a lifelong Democrat and a member of the Kennedy family, was behind him and would, in fact, for the first time in her life vote for a Republican. Schwarzenegger said that there was a disconnect between the people of the State of California and the politicians who run it. He pointed a finger at the incumbent Democratic governor and very unpopular governor of California, Gray Davis, and said that he, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was the man to fix things. And for those that weren't going to work for the people, he said, echoing a line from his popular Terminator movies, then hasta la vista, baby.

Charles Feldman, CNN, Burbank, California.
