CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: A death sentence has just been handed down in an al Qaeda related terrorist attack in Bali. This man was found guilty in that deadly nightclub bombing back on October that killed more than 202 people.
Maria Ressa live by videophone from Bali with details -- hello, Maria.

MARIA RESSA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Carol.

Seven hours after the proceedings began today, a little more than that, judges handed a guilty verdict, the first for the Bali trial shows Indonesia's resolve in fighting terrorism, giving the death sentence to 41-year-old Amrozi bin Nurhasyim. Known as the smiling bomber, he basically stayed true to form. When he heard the verdict, he did two thumbs up. His lawyers say they will appeal, but he says he doesn't want to. Death for him, he says, is a martyr's suicide -- Carol.

COSTELLO: What is the mood there after this verdict was handed down, because we know yesterday in Jakarta there was a big bombing? What's the mood there like today?

RESSA: Well, the verdict comes at an extremely insecure time in Indonesia. Intelligence officials and law enforcement forces are actually warning of the possibility of future attacks. The verdict came just two days after the Marriott bombing in Jakarta. They are warning of possible future attacks from the Jamia Islamia -- this is al Qaeda's arm in Southeast Asia -- in retaliation for the verdict today -- back to you, Carol.

COSTELLO: Maria Ressa live from Bali this morning.
