CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Arnold Schwarzenegger has ended the suspense, saying he will run in California's recall election. Schwarzenegger insists he's the people's guy and no candidate of special interests.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER (R), CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR CANDIDATE: Let the people have the choice. If there's a hundred candidates out there, let the people choose what they want. You know, they’ll have a better representative than what they have now. That is the key thing. And I want to make sure that they can get trust and I want to let them know that I do not have to bow to any special interests. I have plenty of money. No one can pay me off, trust me. No one.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

COSTELLO: It may be unusual, but it's certainly not unprecedented for actors to turn their star power into political power.

CNN's John Dedakis (ph) has a look at some of them.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

RONALD REAGAN: Win just one for the gipper.

JOHN DEDAKIS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Ronald Reagan is probably the most famous actor turned politician. After his movie career faded, he was elected California's governor in 1966 and again in 1970.

REAGAN: I, Ronald Reagan, do solemnly swear.

DEDAKIS: Of course, his biggest election victory came 10 years later when he became president.

The tough guy Clint Eastwood tried his hand at politics in 1986. He was the mayor of Carmel, California for two years. With 10 gold records, several TV shows and a famous ex-wife, Sonny Bono made his political move in 1988 when he became the mayor of Palm Springs, California. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1994 and again in 1996.

Fred Grandy's ship sailed without him when he set his sights on Washington. Grandy, better known as Gopher on "The Love Boat," was elected to the House of Representatives four times. He represented his home state of Iowa from 1987 to 1995.

Shortly after Schwarzenegger announced his intentions Wednesday, Gary Coleman from TV's "Different Strokes" announced his. He, too, will make a run for California's top seat, but in an odd twist, Coleman says he's not qualified and will vote for Schwarzenegger.

Ronald Reagan broke new ground in Hollywood. He went from actor to governor of California to president of the United States. But without an amendment to the constitution, it's unlikely that the Austrian born Schwarzenegger will get that far.

John Dedakis, CNN, Atlanta.
