CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Improvised terror. A homemade bomb explodes in Iraq. One American soldier is dead. It happened about 45 miles from Baghdad.
Let's take you to Baghdad now and Harris Whitbeck.

Harris -- bring us up-to-date.

HARRIS WHITBECK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Carol, the soldier was part of a unit that belongs to the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division. They had taken a position in Baquba, which is north of Baghdad, and their position was hit by an improvised explosive device. One soldier was killed and two more were wounded.

Meanwhile, in Tikrit, which is Saddam Hussein's ancestral homeland, the U.S. Army's 4th I.D. has launched Operation Ivy Lightning. The idea there is to fan out from urban centers, like Tikrit proper and Baji (ph), another major town there, into the countryside to look for suspected loyalists of the former regime, and also to look for those who are suspected of being behind the attacks on U.S. soldiers. This operation is being supported with heavy weaponry. Army Apache attack helicopters are being used and heavy armored units are being used as well.

Meanwhile, down south in the city of Basra, which was the scene of intense rioting this weekend, has been reported as being calm today. Two people died over the weekend. They were protesting the lack of access to electricity and a lack of access to gasoline and to diesel. The British army, which controls Basra, has started distributing gasoline in an effort to calm the people down, down there -- Carol.

COSTELLO: All right, Harris Whitbeck reporting live from Baghdad this morning.
