CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: To Iraq now. At 4:50 Eastern this morning, we got word another American had been killed north of Baghdad. It is the fourth American death this week.
Live to Tikrit and Jane Arraf.

Details for us -- Jane?

JANE ARRAF, CNN BAGHDAD BUREAU CHIEF: Carol, military officials here say it was a soldier who was fatally wounded in an armored personnel carrier -- another one wounded as well -- as they were driving along an access road near here in Saddam's hometown. They hit an explosive device. It's not clear whether it was a landmine or an improvised explosive device, but that soldier has died of his injuries. The other one is in stable condition.

Now, also overnight, two Iraqis were killed, according to officials here, in two separate incidents -- one in Baquba (ph), one in Balad, both of them hot spots. Now, these happened when people opened fire on American soldiers. The soldiers returned fire, killing two of them in those two incidents.

And details emerging of what was described last night as a major bust, a raid that netted four people that had long been sought by military officials here.

And now, one of those had originally been described by some as one of Saddam's bodyguards. He is not. He is a bodyguard to, officials are not saying whom, but they say one of the people on that list of top 55. The other one still described as a former chief of staff of Saddam's Republican Guard, but not the former chief of staff on that playing card list who is No. 14. So, people they believe are useful, but not as extremely high-level people as had first possibly been thought -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Jane Arraf reporting live for us this morning.
