CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: As a hair style, the mullet fell out of favor as quickly as Billy Ray Cyrus' 15 minutes of fame.
But as Jeanne Moos reports, there is an effort under way to bring the mullet back to its place of prominence.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The dictionary defines mullet as a kind of fish, and it's true, there's something fishy about this wig.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: How do I look?

MOOS (on camera): Well...

(voice-over): Short on top, long in the back, the mullet has been much maligned since its heyday in the '80s.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What?

MOOS: It had a starring role in "The Adventures of Joe Dirt."

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "THE ADVENTURES OF JOE DIRT")

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Here is a picture of Joe when he was a baby.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: It's the subject of mocking Web sites such as rapemymullet. There's even a new UPN series coming out called "The Mullets.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "THE MULLETS")

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Who could tell me the three sweetest words in the English language?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Pamela Anderson Mullet.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: "The Mullets'" tacky images like an arrow through Billy Ray Cyrus's "Achy Breaky Heart."

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP "ACHY BREAKY HEART") BILLY RAY CYRUS: Just don't think you don't stand...

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: But finally, someone is paying homage to the mullet.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You've got to love it. Give it some love.

MOOS: From the basement of this home near Trenton, New Jersey, three partners have launched a business selling mullet wigs.

(on camera): Ooh, I'm caught. Sorry, I'm caught in your mullet.

(voice-over): There are four styles, three for the guys, one for the ladies. The three friends got the idea while vacationing in Las Vegas, where they were poking fun at all the people wearing mullets.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, we kind of all looked at each other and we were like ding, that's a good idea.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She said what?

MOOS: Now they're advertising their wigs on mullet Web sites and selling them for $19.99 at mulletwigs.com.

(on camera): They're so shiny. What are they made out of?

FRANK KOLLER: A hundred percent Chinese synthetic fiber.

MOOS: Frank Koller's mullet expertise dates back to the seventh grade.

KOLLER: I actually did have a mullet. I'm not lying about this.

MOOS: We road tested the mullet wig at a nearby strip mall and my hair did attract a few stares.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You look like somebody that I know.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, beautiful.

MOOS (on camera): Now, come on.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No, I was looking at your hair and that's the first thing I noticed.

MOOS (voice-over): The mullet wig is even going undercover.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, an undercover police officer in Indianapolis bought it because I guess a downtown drug infested area has many people who have legitimate mullets.

MOOS: "Us" magazine calls the mullet Hollywood's hot hair trend, showing Halle Berry and Gwen Stefani wearing offshoots of the mullet.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It grows on you, you know what I mean? MOOS: Does it look like it's growing on us?

Jeanne Moos, CNN, Hamilton Township, New Jersey.
