KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: We're going to take a quick look now at some of today's other news, starting with preparations for the Scott Peterson murder trial.
Peterson faces a preliminary hearing September 9 on charges that he murdered his pregnant wife, Laci.

David Mattingly joins us now from outside the courthouse in Modesto, California -- David.

DAVID MATTINGLY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Kyra, in the past four months, we have seen a variety of pretrial appearances by Scott Peterson here in a Modesto courtroom. We've been able to do that because a judge has allowed a single camera inside the courtroom to record the proceedings and then provide that tape to all the media outlets outside the courtroom who are interested in broadcasting it.

What we're waiting for right now is a ruling from the judge, from Al -- Judge Al Jerolami, on whether or not he will allow cameras inside the preliminary hearing that's scheduled for September 9. That's important, because that's when we will find out, after months of speculation, what some of this evidence is that police have against Scott Peterson, and why they think that he murdered his wife, Laci.

Laci was reported missing Christmas Eve. She was in her eighth month of pregnancy. Her body and that of her unborn son were found on the shores of San Francisco Bay four months ago.

The entire time, there has been a tremendous amount of media interest in this case, from the time she was missing until now, with the court proceedings.

What we're waiting on is the judge to decide whether or not cameras will be allowed in that courtroom, and a lot is riding on it, because at this point, the officials here in this county have received 400 inquiries from different news organizations wanting to cover that pretrial hearing, Kyra.

PHILLIPS: David Mattingly, live from Modesto. Thank you.
