DR. SANJAY GUPTA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Now here's some news to help you keep feeling fit.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

GUPTA (voice-over): They seem to possess all the hiking tools, from backpacks to banter, even sometimes walking sticks. But one thing is clearly missing, their shoes.

STEVE TORDOFF, BAREFOOT ENTHUSIAST: I wouldn't enjoy it as much if I had shoes on, because you feel trapped. Your feet want to get out.

GUPTA: They say barefoot hiking is an exercise in feeling their environment more fully and that bare feet are more flexible, which works more muscles when walking. But if you decide to hike with or without shoes, the Sierra Club offers these tips. Be aware of your surroundings, wear reflective clothing if hiking late into the day and stay on the trail.
