CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: For those of us who were not in the middle of the blackout, it's sometimes hard to know what people in the Northeast and the Midwest went through.
Jeanne Moos has more on the "hardships" that some New Yorkers endured.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): You can't hold a candle to the suffering those of us in the blackout had to endure.

(on camera): What did you miss the most during the blackout?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: My TV.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Air conditioning.

MOOS: I have to admit, I missed my blow dryer. What did you miss?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: My fan.

MOOS (voice-over): Having survived without subways or elevators, blackout veterans are resting their tootsies and comparing notes about who climbed the most floors.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Up 14 flights of stairs.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I walked up 17 flights in the dark.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We're on the 66th floor.

MOOS (on camera): Can I ask if your calves are sore?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: My calves are killing me, yes. I was crippled on Saturday.

MOOS (voice-over): But lest you think we're a bunch of whining wimps, listen to New York's governor.

GOV. GEORGE PATAKI (R), NEW YORK: I think we can all be enormously proud.

MOOS: Enormously proud that we didn't loot and run wild, as some New Yorkers did during the last blackout.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Survivor T-shirts over here.

MOOS: We get to wear "I survived black Thursday" T-shirts after merely a day or two without power. But do you see Iraqis wearing survival slogans? And their blackout has gone on for months. In this cartoon from the "Arizona Republic," "New York says the power is off." Cleveland asks, "Where's my water?" Detroit complains "no air conditioning." While Baghdad says gleefully, "this is too good."

And, in fact, Iraqis did have a message for Americans.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The American people, I wish they would not have power for two or three days so that they can feel what the Iraqis go through.

MOOS: But Iraqis didn't have to face the same hardships we did.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I actually was at home watching "Oprah" when it happened. I was like oh my god, I'm missing "Oprah."

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I missed being able to get my car out of the garage when it's on the third level.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I guess I'd have to say the ATM, because I didn't have...

MOOS (on camera): Because you were broke?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Because I was broke. I didn't have any cash on me and I had no food in my fridge.

MOOS (voice-over): As for those "I survived the blackout" T- shirts, maybe they should make them with four holes.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: My dog here missed the A.C.

MOOS: Jeanne Moos, CNN, New York.
