HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: We want to take you back to Chicago, south side of Chicago actually, where we have been telling you about some breaking news happening there today at a used auto parts store, recycling plant actually, where there has been a workplace shooting possibly by a disgruntled employee. We want to get the very latest from the public information officer David Bayless with the Chicago P.D.
Good morning to you, Officer Bayless. Thanks for being with us.

Can you just clue us in what you know at this point?

DAVID BAYLESS, CHICAGO POLICE: Sure, our details now are general, but approximately 9:00 an individual entered the building which we believe he was employed at and was on the brink of being terminated. Shots were fired. We have five individuals shot. We can't confirm the status of them right now. We made entry approximately an hour later, secured the building, and took the offender into our custody. He also has been shot, and I don't have an update on his status now.

COLLINS: Can you tell us about the five people shot, if they have indeed been taken out of the building, have they been taken to hospitals?

BAYLESS: They have been removed from the building and are being taken to hospitals now. I don't have an update on their status. As soon as we get that, we will provide that of course.

COLLINS: What can you tell us as far as a shootout with police? I understand from the press conference heard earlier from Pat Camden that at least two times, this individual did fire at police.

BAYLESS: Yes, shots were fired by and at the police in this instance. When we did make entry after the second round of shots fired, the offender was hit, we believe by the police, but that, again, those are details we are still sorting out at this point.

COLLINS: All right, What are we seeing now in that area? Has the area been evacuated? We earlier had seen some live pictures where quite a few people were in the streets. I was just wondering if those are emergency workers at this point and where the rest of the workers from this plant or factor are at this time.

BAYLESS: Well, the building has been secured. We're busy right now talking to people inside the building, trying to gather as much information as possible. I'm sorry, I can't tell you how many people were at work at the time of the shooting.

But what you're seeing now is a very early stages of a homicide investigation that's taking place. We are gathering information, treating the area, obviously, as a crime scene, and getting as much information about what took place as possible.

COLLINS: All right, and we certainly understand how that will take some time.

BAYLESS: Yes.

COLLINS: We appreciate you being with us this morning.

BAYLESS: Certainly.

COLLINS: Once again public information officer David Bayless from the Chicago Police Department.
