CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Angry mobs in Iraq kill a British soldier and injure another. We want to get more details on that. Rym Brahimi live in Baghdad now.
Rym -- tell us what happened.

RYM BRAHIMI, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Carol, a convoy of British soldiers was heading back to its base in Amadar (ph), which is just a little bit north of the southern city of Basra. They were heading back after an arrest operation, but they were met by a roadblock.

Now, that caused them to divert. They got diverted into a village, where they were met by an angry mob. Trying to go around that mob they saw that they were met by yet another angry mob. They basically were caught or trapped between two crowds. So, the soldiers jumped out of their convoy, shot two warning shots into the air, and at that point they were fired at by small-arms fire and rocket- propelled grenades.

One British soldier was killed, the other one was wounded seriously in the hand, but he is in stable condition, from what we hear. They were then escorted back to their base with helicopter air cover.

But it's just another example of the violence that they're being met with, as well as U.S. forces. As you know, they face 12 attacks daily in the areas that they patrol, and that's the 11th British soldier actually that's been killed since May the 1st, when President George Bush declared the end of major combat operations -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Rym Brahimi bringing us up-to-date live from Baghdad this morning.
