CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Music lovers are gearing up for tonight's 20th anniversary of the MTV Music Video Awards. But it's not always the music that's the most memorable.
CNN's Jeanne Moos takes a look back at two decades of highlights.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Oh, boy, it's Britney. Yikes, that's Marilyn Manson. There goes Ozzy Osbourne. If you want to ride the merry go round that our pop culture has become, it's hard to ignore the MTV Music Video Awards. In 20 years, we've seen Madonna writhe on the stage, looking not much like a virgin.

MADONNA: Oh, oh.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: We've seen her vogue.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM MTV VIDEO AWARDS)

MADONNA: Come on, vogue.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: We've seen her upstaged by Courtney Love barging into a live interview.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM MTV VIDEO AWARDS)

COURTNEY LOVE: What you doing?

MADONNA: I'm talking to her.

LOVE: Am I fully interrupting you?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, no, no.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS (on camera): What was she on that night?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She had been, I think, celebrating a little early. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM MTV VIDEO AWARDS)

LOVE: If I'm interrupting you, you know, and you guys are in a -- I'm just feisty.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS (voice-over): There have been contrived situations, for instance, when Mariah and Whitney wore the same dress.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM MTV VIDEO AWARDS)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Try it on me.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: And spontaneous moments, like when Diana Ross gave Lil' Kim a hand. There have been odd couples who got along, like Martha Stewart and Busta Rhymes.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM MTV VIDEO AWARDS)

BUSTA RHYMES: Because, you know, the party, it don't stop until we say.

MARTHA STEWART: Yes, right.

BUSTA RHYMES: What the dilly, you all.

STEWART: Oh, is that what you say?

BUSTA RHYMES: No doubt.

STEWART: What the dilly, you all.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: And odd couples who generated friction.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM MTV VIDEO AWARDS)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You used to wear gowns and it's funny, now you wear diapers.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No one had told Uncle Miltie that he'd be presenting with a, you know, seven foot tall drag queen.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM MTV VIDEO AWARDS)

MILTON BERLE: Let me tell you something.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: To put its own spin on the 20th anniversary show, MTV commissioned New York's School of Visual Arts to construct a carousel at Rockefeller Center. These pop stars really do have swollen heads, from Snoop Dog to Kid Rock.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I don't know who that is.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Who is that?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We don't know. We're stumped.

MOOS (on camera): Cyndi Lauper.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM MTV VIDEO AWARDS)

CYNDI LAUPER: Oh, girls just want to have fun.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS (voice-over): So does Marilyn Manson.

(on camera): You should see the rear view.

(voice-over): And where would the music video awards be without Michael Jackson kissing Lisa Marie Presley? Accepting a non-existent award.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Someone had told Michael that it was a artist of the millennium award that he was getting.

MOOS: Actually, it was just supposed to be a birthday celebration for Michael. But he went ahead and gave thanks for...

MICHAEL JACKSON: Artist of the millennium award.

MOOS: From Pee Wee to P. Diddy, stop the pop culture merry go round, I want to get off.

Jeanne Moos, CNN, New York.
