CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: It's time for your daily dose of California politics. Well, we've got you covered this morning. Sure, you know Arnold and Arianna. And who hasn't heard of Gary Coleman and Larry Flynt? But what about those other would-be governors?
Dan Kerman of our affiliate KRON has the introduction.

DAN KERMAN, CNN AFFILIATE KRON REPORTER (voice-over): These faces may look unfamiliar, but one of these people could be California's next governor. Saturday morning, more than 35 of the lesser-known gubernatorial candidates met aboard the USS Hornet in Alameda to plan out strategy for the rest of the campaign.

JON ZELLHOEFER (R), CALIFORNIA GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE: At no time in American history have 35 politicians, 35 citizens, 35 of us who are representing different parties stood together in one election for any office, much less an office as important as that of governor.

KERMAN: While these candidates don't agree on many of the issues, they do agree they can't do it alone, and they blame the news media.

MAURICE WALKER (GREEN), CALIFORNIA GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE: We think it's in all of the candidates' interests to join, because we don't think that most of the candidates are getting enough media attention.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This was an attempt to help even out the stakes somewhat.

CHERYL BLY-CHESTER (R), CALIFORNIA GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE: We did not sign up to make a mockery of the system, and we don't want the media to be making a mockery of it or to present it as though we were making a mockery of it.

KERMAN: The hope is that by appearing together, these lesser- known candidates will get more time in the spotlight.

BLY-CHESTER: Once the public knows that we have a serious message that the public will be interested. They'll be reading the statements at the back of the voter pamphlet instead of just saying, yes, yes, yes, that's not one of the big guys.

KERMAN: Beating front runners Bustamante and Schwarzenegger will be no easy task, and that's why some are not pinning their success on victory.

DANIEL WATTS (GREEN), CALIFORNIA GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE: I don't have any delusions of actually winning, but what I'm trying to do is concentrate on the student fee increases of the last year. College fees were raised by almost 40 percent. So, I'm trying to get the major candidates, like Arnold and Cruz Bustamante, to pay attention to this. None of the candidates are addressing this issue.

KERMAN (on camera): Though this group has various opinions on the issues, they can all agree that California government needs to be put back in the hands of the people, and they'll proclaim their message once again when they meet in Beverly Hills on September 7.

Along San Francisco Bay, Dan Kerman for CNN.
