FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: More poll politics in California's recall. The latest numbers show support is waning for the recall. Fifty-five percent support the measure, but that number is down from 58 percent last month. As for the candidates themselves, Democratic front runner Cruz Bustamante is leading with the support of 30 percent of those polled, while Arnold Schwarzenegger gets 25 percent.
But without Republican State Senator Tom McClintock in the race, Schwarzenegger apparently edges ahead by a very slim margin. The field poll also shows that opposition to the recall rose from 37 percent to 40 percent. Governor Gray Davis thinks that's pretty positive. He still says the recall is nothing more than a ploy by the Republicans to steal his office.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

GOV. GRAY DAVIS (D), CALIFORNIA: The Republicans did not like the results of the last election because they lost, so they want to have another one. I liken it to the Oakland Raiders after they lost to Tampa Bay last Super Bowl -- and I happened to be there. I was betting some wine against Jeb Bush, which I had to send down to Florida because Oakland lost, saying hey, we didn't like the results of that game, we want to play you again.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

WHITFIELD: Meanwhile, Arnold Schwarzenegger's spokesman calls it a two man race, with his boss the only Republican with a chance to win. At a rally Monday, Schwarzenegger repeated his stand that it would be beneficial if he were the only Republican in the race, but adds he has no plans to ask McClintock to drop out.

The Schwarzenegger campaign may get a boost from his famous wife. Maria Shriver made her first solo campaign stop on behalf of her other half.

For more on that and the controversy that greeted her, here's George Franco of CNN affiliate KOVR.

GEORGE FRANCO, KOVR CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Maria Shriver, Mrs. Arnold Schwarzenegger, arrives to a throng of supporters and opponents at the Wal-Mart.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Sell your stock! Arnold, sell your stock! FRANCO: Big labor accuses Schwarzenegger, i.e., Shriver, of supporting Wal-Mart, which doesn't provide health care for its workers.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The fact that Maria would be out here promoting a company that don't believe in paying family health care is a disgrace to the Kennedy family.

FRANCO: But Shriver, part of the Kennedy clan, defended her famous actor husband, now turned California gubernatorial candidate.

MARIA SHRIVER, SCHWARZENEGGER'S WIFE: There is no doubt in my mind that Arnold is a supporter of working people. He has worked his whole life. He's met his own payroll. He's hired people. And I think he would be a great advocate for working people.

FRANCO: The chants, both for and against Schwarzenegger, for and against the recall, drowned out any possibility of Shriver addressing the crowd. But she was here to encourage voter registration, crowds and all.

SHRIVER: Whatever they want to say, I think it's great. I never am against that. That's what great about America.

FRANCO: Dozens registered to vote as Shriver worked her way around the registration table.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I'm signing up to vote, registering.

FRANCO (on camera): What do you think of all this attention?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It's crazy, but it's a lot of fun, too.
