CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Survivors of heart disease and stroke in the Pacific Northwest are not taking their conditions lying down.
CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta reports on a relay where everyone gets a second chance.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DR. SANJAY GUPTA, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): At age 70, John Law has raced past decades of heart problems...

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Way to go John, buddy.

GUPTA: ... to be the oldest member of a unique relay team called Scar Trek.

JOHN LAW, HEART SURGERY SURVIVOR: Since I had this stroke in January, to me it's a celebration that I'm here.

GUPTA: It's the 200 mile Hood to coast relay and each team member runs three legs, averaging 18 miles.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: So we're wishing that Scottie could beam us from one point to the other.

GUPTA: A formidable task for these members of the Starship Enterprise.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: On this team there are 12 guys and 13 open heart strategies and one M.S. and one epilepsy.

GUPTA: Fifty-seven-year-old Mark Worden, a former world class swimmer who had surgery on a leaky mitral valve. He runs against the clock and his heart is skipping beats.

MARK WORDEN, HEART SURGERY SURVIVOR: So when I had arrhythmias, I suddenly, I can't compete. I mean I can't, I'm not getting any air.

GUPTA: Leg 26, Andrew Karplus is running with a bovine valve in his heart. Nineteen miles is as far as he's ever run.

ANDREW KARPLUS: Whew! My heart felt great. It was just my legs that were tired.

GUPTA: Most of the Scar Trek crew sailed. Some had to walk, smoothly during the race. Most importantly, all had their doctors' OK to run.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I'm looking for 395. It looks like the hill got to him a little bit.

GUPTA: Leg 29 and nearing the end of the race. Captain Kirk is running despite two open heart surgeries. Then finally, 31 hours, 42 minutes, 36 seconds after it began, the Scar Trek odyssey comes to an end.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Scar brothers!
