CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Music lovers around the country are waking up to the sad news that Johnny Cash has died.
Mark Ericson and Danielle Carrier, better known as the WOKQ Waking Crew in Portsmouth and Manchester, New Hampshire are on the phone with us right now.

You guys are a country music station, so we wanted to ask you what Johnny Cash's death means to country music fans.

MARK ERICSON, WOKQ WAKING CREW RADIO SHOW HOST: Well, I think you have to go back and realize that this is one of the guys who brought us all to this dance in the first place. Since 1955, this guy was making music and winning awards up until the MTV Awards a week ago.

COSTELLO: It's just incredible. He tallied more pop hit singles that Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, the Four Seasons, David Bowie, the Supremes, Elton John, Billy Joel and Kenny Rogers.

DANIELLE CARRIER, WOKQ WAKING CREW RADIO SHOW HOST: And, you know, you really shouldn't be surprised by that at all, considering where he first began his recording at Sun Records -- the same place as Elvis.

COSTELLO: He also won 11 Grammys. I want to talk about his wife, because she recently passed away and he didn't know how he was going to go on without her.

ERICSON: And that was one of the things that was talked about when June Carter Cash passed away not too long ago was that -- and family and friends had said that they were so close and she was such a part of his life that indeed he may have a lot of difficulty going on.

COSTELLO: Oh, yes. And he was in such ill health, but perhaps she just kept him going. And, I mean, we don't know. He had many health problems, didn't he?

ERICSON: Oh...

CARRIER: He had numerous health problems. Actually, up until yesterday, he was released from the hospital, and then only to be brought back again today due to respiratory difficulties.

COSTELLO: Yes, he was...

ERICSON: And that... COSTELLO: Mark, was he in the hospital for stomach problems on Tuesday?

ERICSON: Well, there were a few different things going on. There were some stomach issues. There were some issues with the pancreas, and most of that seemed to be related to diabetes. Plus, he also suffered from Parkinson's disease. So, medically, Johnny Cash, who actually because of all of these difficulties, was unable to attend the MTV Music Awards, where his video actually won the award a couple of weeks back.

COSTELLO: Yes, it won for cinematography. It's just incredible. Well, I'm sure you have many big plans ahead as far as tributes go towards Johnny Cash.

ERICSON: That's where we're heading this morning.

COSTELLO: All right, Mark and Danielle Carrier, thank you very much, of the WOKQ Waking Crew in New Hampshire.
