CNN SUNDAY NIGHT

Are J.Lo and Ben Affleck Over?

Aired September 14, 2003 - 22:25   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: The critics said it wouldn't last. And now on the day Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck were to exchange vows, it appears their storybook romance is over. The Hollywood power couple has reportedly split up.
Tom O'Neil, senior editor of "In Touch Weekly" in New York has some theories and so does "Entertainment Tonight" correspondent Jann Carl in Los Angeles.

Jann?

JANN CARL, "ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT" CORRESPONDENT: Carol?

LIN: Jann, Jann, Jann, Jann, we just talked last night about this.

CARL: Yes, we did. And we made bets...

LIN: What happened?

CARL: We made bets about it, but we both bet the same thing. So you know, we'll have to bet something different next time, so somebody owes somebody dinner.

Well, this is - I will say first of all I don't think I've seen this much interest in a couple since maybe Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. Although I think this is almost heightened because I think the appetite that the public has for celebrities and what they're doing has grown that much more.

I think Ben and Jen are certainly at the top of the celebrity food chain. There's so much interest. There's a lot of rumor. There's a lot of conjecture.

LIN: Right.

CARL: You know, I first want to say nobody truly knows what's in their hearts but them. And until they come forward and speak, we will not know. But I can tell you this. You know, have they split? Are they just spending time apart? This is what I can tell you. ET has spotted Jennifer in Miami's South Beach. There are some reports that have her there with friends, but no one has reported seeing her there with Ben.

There are other reports about Ben's whereabouts is that many, many reports saying he's still here on the West Coast. He was expected in Las Vegas. He was supposed to be at the Oscar de la Hoya and the Shane Moseley fight. He was not spotted there, but "The New York Post" says that they spotted him at the Hardrock Hotel poolside all alone.

LIN: Boy.

CARL: So that's - so right now, they're being spotted as being very far apart by coast.

LIN: Okay, Tom? Tom?

TOM O'NEIL, SR. EDITOR, "IN TOUCH WEEKLY": Yes?

LIN: You have some theories about this. What went wrong and who left who?

O'NEIL: I think - my personal theory here, but I think that Ben got a good up close look at the diva he was about to marry. They've only been together for a year. I'm sure she's managed to behave herself. But this is a woman who can't even put on a concert without terrorizing the staff, making sure that her dressing room is in white with white lilies and that her tea is stirred, no kidding, counterclockwise.

Now can you imagine what she was putting everybody through for this wedding? One month ago, Ben told us up in Boston at "In Touch," the media's going to be at this wedding. We're going to include you guys. But we really felt he meant it. So then what happened after that with 3 decoy weddings and all this nonsense? I think it was the diva in action.

LIN: All right, well get a load of this rock. Okay, the rock, folks. The million dollar pink diamond. All right, Tom, who gets to keep it?

O'NEIL: She gets to keep it, according to protocol, I think, sure.

LIN: Jann?

CARL: Well, you know, here's the deal. What I understand is if the grooms calls the wedding off, then I believe it is expected that the woman gets to keep the ring. But if the, you know, bride to be calls the wedding off, I believe it is - it's supposed to be that she gives it back.

I do want to also say, Carol, we did speak to Ken Sunshine today, who is Ben's representative. And basically what Ken said was I have no knowledge of what you're talking about when we told him we heard they had split. And he said, "And I have no comment."

There are also reports from Dan Florez, and that is Jennifer's representative. He said he believes the couple is still together, but he had not supposedly spoken to Lopez in several days. So again, it leaves a lot...

LIN: Yes. CARL: ...to the imagination still.

LIN: Yes, all right. And all these rumors about how she went to a voodoo doctor to talk about the marriage.

O'NEIL: That was no rumor. There are pictures of that, you know, of her coming out. And she has a long history with this woman, you know?

LIN: Oh my gosh. All right.

CARL: We'll see. Carol, can I tell you one more thing?

LIN: Sure.

CARL: In the midst of all of that, the other person that has huge celebrity, Michael Jackson, Mark Stein is the reporter for "Entertainment Tonight" was the only reporter invited to the party. And "Entertainment Tonight's" going to have a lot that's went on.

Can I give you a little teaser, Carol?

LIN: I think you just did, Jann.

CARL: Plus a huge food fight with Michael.

LIN: Okay, oh no! All right, stay tuned. Thanks so much, Jann Carl.

O'NEIL: Thank you.

LIN: Tom O'Neil with "In Touch" magazine.
