CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Investigators in Los Angeles are trying to piece together what motive or set of circumstances led to the shooting death of Yetunde Price. The eldest sister of tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams was shot to death early this morning. And our Paul Vercammen is in the suburb of Compton where Price was shot. Paul, what have you learned so far?
PAUL VERCAMMEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, right now we have detectives scouring this neighborhood you see behind me, looking at a house and on the street for any clues as to what led to the fatal shooting of Yetunde Price. She is, as you said, the eldest sister of Venus and Serena Williams.

Now, police say that Price died at a local hospital from a gunshot wound or wounds to the upper torso shortly after midnight. Price is 31 years old and lived in Corona. That's about 40 miles southeast of here.

Now, authorities will only say that Price and a male were in a white van. They will not say who was riding when he got in some sort of confrontation with some of the neighbors on Greenleaf Street.

Now, Price basically, and another witness, as we said before, got in this confrontation and police say they are now interviewing several witnesses, and those witnesses could possibly be arrested down the road for the murder of Serena and Venus Williams' sister.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DEP. SCOTT BUTLER, LA COUNTY SHERRIF'S DEPARTMENT: When they responded to investigate they discovered that a man and woman who were driving a white SUV-type vehicle became involved in a confrontation with some local residents. That confrontation led to gunfire. The woman that was inside that vehicle was shot, transported to a local hospital, where unfortunately she died as a result of his injury.

VERCAMMEN: And of course that woman, Venus and Serena's elder sister Yetunde. We understand all members of the Williams family are headed to California. We have learned that Serena was in Toronto where she was making some sort of a television appearance or doing a shoot.

We should also note you might have heard that sheriff's deputies barricaded the street earlier with a possibility of suspects inside, that turned out to be empty. And off camera, not wanting to go on camera, several neighbors here said, there had been a murder on the street about a month ago. That's the latest here in Compton. I'm Paul Vercammen. Now back to you in the studio.

LIN: Paul, I know details are just beginning to emerge. I'm wondering, other than working for the Williams' sisters, do you know any more personal details about Yetunde Price?

VERCAMMEN: Well we understand, as we said, we believe she is the oldest of five of the Williams' sisters and that she did work with the sisters as a personal assistant. You well know, the Williams are a very tight-knit family and many were involved in the Williams tennis organization, if you'd like to call it that.

LIN: All right, thank you very much. Paul Vercammen, working that story. We'll talk to you throughout the evening as you get developments. Thank you.
