CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: So get ready, Isabel is coming. The category two, or almost three, hurricane has sustained winds of more than 100 miles per hour.
Residents of New York's Long Island have been preparing for Isabel. New York's governor says the state's National Guard has been told to be prepared.

In Massachusetts, boat owners have been preparing, as well, pulling their boats out of the water or making sure they're secure.

But it is in North Carolina where most of the preparations are being made. The Tar Hill State is right in Isabel's path.

In Maryland, the governor has also called out the National Guard. A state of emergency is in effect and residents are being urged to take this storm very seriously. Officials in Ocean City may decide today whether to recommend evacuations.

Alex DeMetrick of our affiliate WJZ has more.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ALEX DEMETRICK, WJZ CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The boardwalk rides are coming down, plywood is going up. For the first time in decades, Ocean City is turning itself into a hard target to ward off a big storm.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I'm not taking a chance this time. I've never boarded up before, in 31 years. But, you know, we've played -- we've gambled, you know, several hurricanes went by.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I'm just not taking a chance this time.

DEMETRICK: Signs Hurricane Isabel is moving closer are carried by the Atlantic. Surf is steadily building and beginning to grow dangerous.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: If you know what you're doing, it's, you know, it's safe as can be. It's as dangerous as can be if you don't know what you're doing out there, I guess.

DEMETRICK: It was four years ago at Crisfield and Somerset County, Hurricane Floyd caused flooding then and while one predicted track has Isabel landing in North Carolina...

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We are still in storm mode. We're paying attention here to what's going on.

DEMETRICK: Because hurricanes follow their own fury, not wishful thinking.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You don't let your guard down. The official forecast track has shifted to the left, which is good news for us, although not all models are in agreement with that. So a 10 degree shift to the right could again place this as a Chesapeake Bay issue storm.

DEMETRICK: Which means anything that can be tossed by wind or carried by waves is moving out of the way.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We're trying to save our boat from getting destroyed. We're just -- we just bought it.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She's a coming.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She's coming, huh?

DEMETRICK: Oh, yes, and soon.

(END VIDEOTAPE)
