CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: All right. TV gangsters, undertakers, and politicians go head to head tonight at the 55th annual prime-time Emmy Awards. Jodi Ross joins us from Los Angeles with a look at some of the odds-on Emmy you favorites. Jodi, what do you think?
JODI ROSS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Carol. Look at this. This red carpet is up. The fans are here. Celebrities are due to arrive rather shortly, I would say. It's a very exciting time to be here. They're excited. We're excited.
As far as the show goes this year, it's going to look a little bit like last year because so many of the nominees are repeats from last year with one major difference, and that would be "The Sopranos." They were not eligible last year for any time, but they are back in contention, and the belief from a lot of critics is that they are just going to sweep.
That would include James Gandolfini winning for best actor. The entire show winning for best drama, which has never happened before. Joey Pantoliano, who made an impressive appearance as Ralphie might get supporting actor. And then there's discussion of Edie Falco getting best actress.
But that pits her against maybe the most competitive race of the night against Allison Janey of the "West Wing." Allison Janey has never lost an Emmy when she's been nominated. It's going to be a tough competition, but like I said there is this sort of surge behind "The Sopranos." So we're going to have to see how it goes down.
In the best comedy series category it's all the usuals, "Friends" and "Everybody Loves Raymond," et cetera, but the dark horse in the group is "Curb Your Enthusiasm." That's the HBO show from the creator of "Seinfeld," Mr. Larry David. He's the star, also nominated for an Emmy. There's discussion that that show, with its critical acclaim and its very, very cult following, could do really well tonight.
Other highlights about the show to tell you is that we know rather than one host there are 11. You heard me right. 11 comedians anchoring the show tonight. Conan O'Brien, Brad Garrett, Gary Shandling we know opens the festivities. The producers of the Emmys said they wanted this show to have a bigger feel, a broader comedic appeal to more people, so they decided to bring more people on board.
A humanitarian award is going to Bill Cosby. That will be presented by Ray Romano. And then of course there's John Ritter.
John Ritter was actually going to be announced as a presenter tonight about a week ago, and then of course he passed away suddenly, and producers are still sort of trying to decide exactly what to do with John Ritter. A comic icon, clearly missed by the Hollywood community. What's the best way to pay tribute to this man? Well, that's being discussed as we speak.
I can pretty much promise there will be some sort of memorium, some sort of tribute, because this man was so beloved, everyone we've spoken to feels the loss greatly, and so really it's the Emmys' due to actually pay respects to this man, and I think you will see some sort of beautiful tribute to him tonight.
So it's a jam-packed show. And of course, now to me the most fun part is the red carpet while we wait to see what everybody is wearing, what jewelry they have on, what does their hair look like, who are they with. So really the good stuff's going to start very shortly. We will be right here to bring it all right to you. Carol, I'm excited.
LIN: And you're not looking so bad yourself, Jodi. A lovely dress.
ROSS: Carol, thank you for saying. I have to say the dress from Cantu & Casio. The diamonds from Harry Winston, hello. And the hair and makeup were done by Louis Lacari. I'm a lucky girl today Carol, what can I say. I have a good job.
LIN: You are. And as a true journalist I'm sure you paid for all those items.
ROSS: Of course, I did.
LIN: OK, there you go. Thanks so much, Jodi Ross. We'll be looking for you.
ROSS: Thank you.
