CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: You can be sure a lot of people in the television industry are sleeping this morning. Or maybe they're still partying, actually. The annual primetime Emmy Awards were given out last night and, oh, the stars were out, indeed, including Gary Coleman, who is, of course, running for governor of California.
But the buzz today is not only about the winners, but a few surprises.

CNN's Julie Cevene joins us from Los Angeles with a rundown of the big night -- have you slept yet?

JULIE CEVENE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, no. We have been working all night. But as you can see, it's pretty much cleared out here at the shrine. Everyone is well off to their parties and possibly in bed at this hour. We're not quite sure. Some big winners tonight, so they may still be celebrating here in Los Angeles.

But certainly tributes were a theme tonight, with many entertainers paying respects to those who passed away this year, including John Ritter and Bob Hope. A lot of celebrating to be done, though, especially among HBO and CBS, this year's two big winners.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

CEVENE (voice-over): The big winners of the night got lip service along with their Emmys.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Wow!

CEVENE: "Everybody Loves Raymond" earned the title of Emmy darling Sunday night, with a total of five wins, including best comedy. Doris Roberts and Brad Garrett swept the best supporting actors category. The best actor in a comedy series went to first time nominee Tony Shalhoub for his role as Monk.

DEBRA MESSING, BEST ACTRESS COMEDY: Oh, my god!

CEVENE: The third time was a charm for Debra Messing, who won best actress in a comedy series for "Will and Grace." The NBC hit tied with HBO's "The Sopranos," each earning four statues.

MESSING: There are so many people to thank and there are people I'm going to forget, so I won't mention anyone.

CEVENE: "The Sopranos'" Edie Falco and James Gandolfini rubbed out the competition in the drama category, both taking home an Emmy for best actor. The mob hit also earned an emotional Joe Pantoliano best supporting actor, his first win. Tyne Daly won best supporting actress for her role in the drama "Judging Amy."

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: "The West Wing."

CEVENE: For the fourth time in a row, "The West Wing" won the coveted best drama award, beating out the heat from "The Sopranos" and shutting out "Six Feet Under," which had 16 nominations.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

CEVENE: And, Carol, this year for the first time the reality series category made primetime with "The Amazing Race" beating out "American Idol" and "Survivor."

Live in Los Angeles, I'm Julie Cevene, CNN -- Carol, now back to you.

COSTELLO: All right, many thanks, Julie.

Now you can get some sleep, maybe.

We appreciate it.
