CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: To Iraq now. There has been more bloodshed and more displays of anger toward America.
Walter Rodgers live in Baghdad with details.

Hello -- Walter.

WALTER RODGERS, CNN SENIOR INTERNATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Carol.

The continuing violence in Iraq may actually make it somewhat easier for President Bush at the United Nations to make his case that the Iraqis are not yet ready to assume responsibility for their own security. There are indeed pockets of violent resistance against the coalition and particularly against the United States here.

Last night -- actually about 2:00 this morning, 82nd Airborne soldiers came under fire in al-Jizzer (ph) near the town of Fallujah. They had to call in an airstrike. Reports say between one and three Iraqis were killed when the 82nd Airborne called in those airstrikes.

Additionally, yesterday in Fallujah, which has always been a hotbed of anti-Americanism and support for Saddam Hussein, there was a violent demonstration through the streets there yesterday. Many of the Sunni Muslims who still support Saddam Hussein were firing their Kalashnikovs into the air, not the kind of stability the Americans would say is adequate to turning over the responsibility of local security to the Iraqis themselves. Many of those in that crowd particularly were chanting for the return of Saddam Hussein.

All of this, at least in the short term, may work towards the American president's advantage at the U.N. -- Carol.

COSTELLO: All right, Walter Rodgers bringing us up-to-date live from Baghdad this morning.
