CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: There has been another attack on U.S. troops in Iraq.
CNN's Michael Holmes has that and other news out of the war-torn country right now.

Michael -- good morning.

MICHAEL HOLMES, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning to you, Carol.

That's right. Another U.S. casualty, a fatality. It happened in Kirkuk. That's north of Baghdad -- in fact, northern Iraq.

What happened was a U.S. military vehicle was driving along, we believe either in a convoy or a patrol. It came under attack from rocket-propelled grenades. One U.S. soldier was killed, two others were wounded in this incident and were taken to a military hospital. Their condition at this stage unknown. All of these troops are from the 173rd Airborne.

Now, another -- some mourning going on here in Iraq today, too, for a politician, who was killed -- died yesterday as a result of wounds she sustained back on Saturday. Her name is Dr. Akila al- Hashimi.

Now, she's a member -- was a member of the Governing Council in Iraq, and her funeral, as you can see there, is getting under way. A tragic day for Iraq. She was highly regarded, one of just three women on the Governing Council and the only member of the Governing Council with very senior links to the Baathist Party under Saddam Hussein.

Now, she was shot in an ambush outside her home last Saturday, shot in the stomach and leg. For a couple of days doctors thought she was doing well, but then her condition deteriorated, and she has died.

She was going to be the leading candidate to become Iraq's next ambassador to the United Nations and, in fact, was due to be in New York this week to attend the U.N. General Assembly -- Carol.

LIN: A shame there. Thank you very much, Michael Holmes reporting live in Baghdad.
