CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: More now from Iraq. Word of another U.S. soldier killed. It happened in Kirkuk.
Our Michael Holmes is in Baghdad with that and more on what's going on there -- Michael, first to this U.S. soldier.

Do you know any more details about this attack?

MICHAEL HOLMES, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Carol, details still fairly thin on the ground. I can tell you it did happen about, it would be about 14 hours ago now. Word only now just coming out, however. As you said, it happened in Kirkuk, which is in the north of Iraq. What apparently happened was there was a rocket propelled grenade fired, at least one, and it struck a U.S. military vehicle. One U.S. soldier was killed, two others were wounded. We don't yet know the severity of their injuries. They were taken to a military hospital.

Those soldiers were from the 73rd Airborne -- Carol.

LIN: All right, Michael, also a very sad day for Iraqis today, mourning in the streets.

HOLMES: Yes, there has been. Soldiers aren't the only people being targeted by those who oppose the U.S. presence here. A senior Iraqi politician who was shot last week has died in hospital. In fact, her funeral is taking place as we speak. Dr. Akila al-Hasimi was a member of the Governing Council, one of only three women on the Council and the only member of the Council who had been a very senior figure in the Baathist regime of Saddam Hussein.

However, she was well regarded by those on the Governing Council and, indeed, by the coalition, the civil administration here. Paul Bremer speaking very highly of her. She's been declared by the Council a martyr and there's three days of mourning under way. Her funeral procession, dozens of people turning out to honor her. Her body is now on the way to Najaf, where she will be buried -- Carol.

LIN: All right, thank you very much.

Michael Holmes with the latest out of Baghdad. A lot of news there today.
