LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Now we turn to Iraq. Attacks in the northern towns of Kirkuk and Tikrit left one U.S. soldier today and at least five others wounded. Let's check in now with our Michael Holmes who is in Baghdad, and it's very early in the evening there.
Michael has the very latest for us.

Hello, Michael.

MICHAEL HOLMES, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi to you, Leon.

Yes, let's start with Tikrit. That happened a little earlier today. An incident involving one of those now ubiquitous IEDs, improvised explosive devices. What happened was there was a convoy of Humvees driving along what's known as Highway 1 in Tikrit. And this device blew up, and what we know is that three American soldiers were injured. They are, we're told, in stable condition, undergoing treatment now.

Also in Kirkuk, in northern Iraq, the oil city of Kirkuk, another attack. This time the weapon of choice an RPG, rocket-propelled grenade, fired at a U.S. military vehicle. And in this case, one U.S. soldier was killed. Two others were wounded. They have been treated in a military medical facility as we speak.

Also today, the funeral of a well-known and highly regarded Iraqi politician by the name of Akila Al-Hashemi (ph). She's one of only three women on the Iraqi Governing Council. She was buried today. She died yesterday after being shot late last week as she left her home with her entourage. They were ambushed by assailants, six men in a pickup truck. None of whom, we understand, have been captured as of yet. She was shot in the stomach and the leg and went downhill in the last 48 hours or so, and she died. She's somebody who was part of the former Saddam Hussein's regime, in that she was a senior Baathist. However, she was well regarded, both by the civilian administration here, the U.S.-led administration, and also the Governing Council -- Leon.

HARRIS: All right. Thank you very much, Michael. Michael Holmes reporting live for us this morning from Baghdad.
