LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: U.S. troops and Iraqi police have wrapped up their largest ever joint operation in Saddam Hussein's ancestral hometown of Tikrit.
CNN's Harris Whitbeck is now on duty in Baghdad. He joins us now with details.

Hello, Harris.

ALESSIO VINCI, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Leon.

The raid you refer to, that one conducted by Iraqi policemen and by the U.S. military police, is being hailed as a success by the U.S. military here in Iraq. They say the fact that the raid was led by Iraqis makes it successful.

Now that raid in particular only netted about four people who were detained. This raid was conducted yesterday, and they went into about 15,000 -- 15 houses in downtown Tikrit. They were looking for people they believe might be responsible for attacks on U.S. forces in the Tikrit area, which, as you know, is Saddam Hussein's homeland.

Now, other raids in that area over the last several hours have resulted in numerous detentions. They have also found lots of weapons and ammunition. Now soldiers have been under attack again today in Fallujah. Six soldiers were injured when the convoy they were traveling in came under attack. Apparently it was attacked with improvised explosive devices, and there was also another incident where one U.S. soldier was killed and one U.S. soldier was wounded. That happened again when a convoy hit an improvised explosive device -- Leon.

HARRIS: Harris Whitbeck, reporting live for us from Baghdad. Thank you, Harris. We'll check back with you later on.
