CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: You've heard of the Atkins Diet and the South Beach Diet. But have you ever heard about the ice cream and cookies diet? You're on that every day, I know.
Lisa Drayer of Dietwatch.com joins us live from New York with the -- oh, come on, this doesn't work.
LISA DRAYER, NUTRITIONIST: I know, it sounds too good to be true, right, Carol?
But the reality is there are these diets out there. But these are two different diets.
We have the ice cream diet, brought to you from the editors of "Prevention" magazine. The theory being you can have your ice cream and eat it, too. No need to deprive yourself, but you do need to watch portion sizes. And the diet is based on some research on calcium, which basically states that calcium helps us to burn fat.
Now, in terms of how much ice cream, we're talking about a cup for women each day. That's about two tennis balls' worth, if you can picture that. And one a half cups for men. So men get a little bit more.
But here's the key, Carol. We're not talking about Haagen-Dazs. You have to limit your calories in ice cream to 125 calories per half cup serving. So in total...
COSTELLO: That ain't ice cream, Lisa.
DRAYER: Well, there are some brands out there. But if you do want the Haagen-Dazs, they say once every two weeks because of the saturated fat. So total calories would be 1,500 for women, 2,000 calories for men. This would add up to a loss of about one pound per week, or up to 50 pounds per year.
COSTELLO: Now, is this all you eat? Do you eat food and then you're supposed to eat the ice cream, too?
DRAYER: That's a great question. In fact, you do get calorie controlled meals, and this is really the basis of the diet. That is, calorie controlled meals and snacks, and also fruit as some snacks, as well. So we're talking about a balanced diet, but you can't have your ice cream and your cookies. You have to stick to one treat.
But if you do want cookies, there's also the cookie diet. But this is actually a medical diet from Dr. Sanford Siegel of the Siegel Medical Group in Miami. Carol, he prescribes six hunger suppressing cookies plus dinner for a total of 800 calories per day, 500 of those calories coming from the cookies. He states that the amino acids in the cookies -- this is the building blocks of protein -- that helps to suppress the appetite.
But this is really a very low level and certainly not one that would be sustained over the long-term, although Dr. Siegel claims that many of his patients have lost weight. But some do require appetite suppressants and some thyroid medications for those with thyroid issues.
COSTELLO: I don't know, protein rich cookies just don't sound great to me. Lisa Drayer...
DRAYER: We're not talking about Oreos.
COSTELLO: I don't think so.
Lisa Drayer, many thanks.
Interesting stuff this morning.
DRAYER: Thanks.
