Interview With Wayne Brady

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: That man is on fire. Comedian Wayne Brady is kicking off his second season of his syndicated talk show. He has a little something extra to show for it, two Emmy awards, for outstanding talk show, as well as outstanding talk show host. The man is busy. He's somehow made time to stop in and talk with us today.

WAYNE BRADY, ENTERTAINER: Hey, good morning.

KAGAN: Can we just stop here and say the Emmy Award winning two- time Emmy Award winning Wayne Brady.

BRADY: Actually, I don't want to be technical, but three times. I'm just saying.

KAGAN: Just because you want us to get it right on CNN.

BRADY: Yes, ma'am.

KAGAN: Yes, well, just a couple weeks ago in the primetime Emmy Awards. Let's look at individual performance in a variety or music program.

Some of the competition here, Wayne, Jon Stewart, Dennis Miller, Robin Williams, Martin Short. They were all seated in the audience. It was you who went up on stage.

BRADY: It was absolutely amazing. Robin Williams is really one of my heroes as far as what I do. And to win an award with him sitting in the audience that was absolutely incredible, and I love Jon Stewart. He's one of the smartest guys around. Dennis Miller, he's brilliant. Marty Short, he's a chameleon. I can't say enough about those guys. So I'm still pinching myself a little bit that I'm walking around with my gold naked lady.

KAGAN: Somebody's got to do it.

BRADY: Yes, you know. That's me.

KAGAN: And it is you. And what a year you've had, the debut of your show. The show also won in its first year. I guess you're stopping by because it's the debut of the second season. How are you going to top last year?

BRADY: You know, the thing is, I think I can't top it, and I think that's the trap that a lot of sophomore shows fall into, that we're going try to top it, try to beat it. All I ask for is that we do a great show, and I think the rest of it will come. No one was more surprised that I won best show and best host this year than me. I didn't know that I could do a talk show. I didn't know that we could bring variety to daytime. I didn't know that people wanted to see singing, and dancing and comedy in the morning. So I think that we all just set out blind, and we were really richly rewarded. So I just want to do a great show. We have an A team here, and I'm backed by a great staff. So I just don't want to suck.

KAGAN: Well, you don't do that. Another thing has happened in the last year. You've become dad. That must be a very humbling experience, expanding your heart and bringing you down to Earth when you go home everyday.

BRADY: Well, it's the best experience. No matter how big you get or you have a show, you have your name up around, this little person, you know, she's 8 months now, her name is Mylie (ph). She doesn't care. She doesn't care that you're on TV. All she cares is when you walk through that door and she goes -- that she just wants to see you. So that's what keeps it real. Because all of this could go away. Disney could fire me tomorrow, the show could go down, the studio could blow up, folks could leave. And at the end of the day, I'd still have my daughter. So I don't understand I don't get caught up in the other stuff, then I'm good.

KAGAN: Well, I hardly think that's going to happen. Disney needs as many success as we can get right now. We're happy to have you, and we're happy to have you just for a couple of minutes.

BRADY: Thank so you much for having me.

KAGAN: Good luck for the second season.

BRADY: Thank you.
