CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: On to Iraq now, three more American soldiers have been killed in three separate attacks, all within the space of a few hours.
Our Michael Holmes joins us live from Baghdad now with what happened -- good morning, Michael.

MICHAEL HOLMES, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning to you, Carol.

Yes, a very tragic 24 hours or so for the U.S. military. The most recent of these three deaths happened in a place called Samarrah. Now, this is about 75 miles north of Baghdad. What happened on this occasion was that a soldier from the 4th I.D., the 4th Infantry Division, was traveling near Samarrah, which is in the becoming infamous Sunni Triangle. His convoy hit by a rocket propelled grenade on that occasion. He was evacuated to a nearby military hospital, later died of his injuries.

Two other soldiers killed in separate attacks on Wednesday. That brings, by the way, the total number of deaths since major combat was declared over to 83. One soldier from the 1st Armored Division was killed, three others were wounded. That happened in the Tikrit, near Saddam Hussein's hometown, of course. That convoy was traveling along, again, 4th I.D., when it was hit by a roadside bomb. One soldier was killed, of course, and two others had serious shrapnel wounds. Another had minor injuries and was allowed to return to duty.

The other happened to a soldier from the 1st Armored Division. On this occasion, that happened right here in Baghdad, in the al- Masour District of Baghdad. And two soldiers were shot with a small caliber handgun. One died, the other wounded -- Carol.

COSTELLO: All right, Michael Holmes reporting live from Baghdad this morning.
