CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: To Iraq now. An RPG attack and death, another guerrilla attack hits its mark; this time, it happened north of Baghdad.
Live there now and Michael Holmes.

Hello – Michael.

MICHAEL HOLMES, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Carol. Good morning to you.

Yes, it has been a deadly 24 hours for U.S. forces here in Iraq. The most recent attack, as you pointed out, a rocket-propelled grenade attack on a U.S. convoy in a place called Samarra. That is about 75 kilometers north of Baghdad. One U.S. soldier from the 4th I.D. killed in that incident.

It was not the only one in the last 24 hours; far from it. Earlier in the day, a U.S. soldier was killed, three others were wounded. They were also from the 4th I.D. This happened very close to Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's hometown. An explosive device was used in that attack. That soldier was killed. Two of the three wounded are, we're told, in very poor condition with serious shrapnel wounds. The third injured person was treated for injuries and actually allowed to return to duty.

Continuing on with this deadly tale, another incident. One soldier from the 1st Armored Division killed, another wounded, in Al Mansour, a suburb of Baghdad. Now, what happened there was somebody came up to these soldiers while they were on patrol in a vehicle, and using a small handgun, shot the two soldiers. And no word on what happened to the assailant; believed he got away.

So, yes, a very difficult 24 hours for U.S. service men and women here in Iraq -- Carol.

COSTELLO: All right, Michael Holmes, bringing us up-to-date live from Baghdad this morning.
