HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: People across the nation are talking about the California recall, but in just one day, voters in California will have the final say. Arnold Schwarzenegger is leading in the latest polls and stopped on the steps of the State Capitol to make his point.
Kelly Wallace has more from Sacramento.

WALLACE: The Schwarzenegger strategy this day...

SCHWARZENEGGER: Nest together, walk that last mile.

WALLACE: ... keep the candidate above the fray and let his supporters duke it out and accuse Governor Gray Davis of pushing stories they say are flat out wrong.

REP. DAVID DREIER (R), CALIFORNIA: I will tell you, Wolf, as I listen to sanctimonious statements like that, I will tell you that this is one of the reasons that Californians are going to recall Gray Davis. He has had a pattern over the last two decades in participating in campaigns -- excuse me, excuse me, excuse me.

WALLACE: Schwarzenegger's aides say their internal polling shows the allegations are not sticking. A poll released Sunday shows 54 percent of likely voters would definitely or probably recall Davis. But the number of definite recall votes went down from 52 percent Wednesday to 44 percent Saturday after the allegations against Schwarzenegger surfaced.

(on camera): Ultimately this race will come down to turnout. So Schwarzenegger will be flying around the state Monday while taped messages from the candidate himself will be going to two million households by Election Day.

Kelly Wallace, CNN, Sacramento.

COLLINS: With the allegations against Schwarzenegger taking center stage in the race, the other candidates have been forced to stop talking about their own campaigns in order to address the allegations against their opponent, that includes Democratic front runner Cruz Bustamante who appeared on CNN's "LATE EDITION."

100500CN.V47 COLLINS: Much more on the recall later in this show. But also, be sure to tune in to a little bit later today "INSIDE POLITICS WITH JUDY WOODRUFF." Comes to you from Los Angeles. That's beginning at 3:00 p.m. Eastern. And later, Wolf Blitzer will bring you the big stories and guests from the recall. Wolf kicks off his West Coast coverage at 5:00 p.m. Eastern.

We've got the candidate profiles, the recall procedure. We've got your political fix on our Web site. That address, CNN.com. The AOL keyword is CNN.
