CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: How about more on Gray Davis right now? He's got to be a little nervous. The latest Knight Ridder poll shows about 54 percent want Davis out of there. That's a controversial poll by the way. We're going to get to more on that later.
But let's go live to the phone lines right now, Charles Feldman in Los Angeles with the Davis campaign.

What's the mood?

CHARLES FELDMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, good morning, Carol.

The mood is tentative and nervous. And publicly, the governor is confident, as is his staff. Privately, some of his staff have told me they are concerned, of course.

And you referred to the polls. They do like to point out, and I'm sure you'll touch on that later, that because there is no statistical model for this -- this has never happened before in California -- they're putting a lot of faith in their notion that none of these polls may be very accurate.

So, that's sort of what's keeping them going, plus the fact that nobody really knows who is going to turn out today to vote; again, because this is something that's very historic to the state of California. And because of that, no one really knows how this is going to go. So, any expert who says that they do probably doesn’t know that much about what they're talking about.

So, that's one of the reasons why they're trying to remain optimistic that in the end the voters in this state will say no to the recall. And that would mean that Arnold Schwarzenegger, from their view, would, of course, disappear, and Governor Gray Davis would continue to finish this second term that he was just elected to 11 months ago -- Carol.

COSTELLO: All right, Charles Feldman reporting for us from the Gray Davis campaign.
